Eleven Posts, Four Days, and a Date for Sydney
Eleven posts from Explore week in one place. Plus the replays are live, Vegas 2027 moves to spring, and On Tour reaches Sydney on 3–4 March 2027.
Explore 2026 in Las Vegas wrapped on 3 September. 4,700 attendees, more than 400 sessions across four tracks, and seven product announcements before lunch on day one.
This is the index. Everything I wrote during the week, in one place, plus the two things from the closing day that are actually worth knowing: the replays are live, and the Tour is coming to Sydney.
The scale of it
The four tracks were Cloud Infrastructure, App Modernization, Security and Innovation. The centre of gravity across all of them was VCF 9.1 and Private AI.

Day one, the seven announcements - four posts
Seven announcements landed on 31 August. They interlock, so I covered them as four pieces rather than seven.
- VMware Private AI Cloud, AI Factory and the model layer - the platform, the automation underneath it, and 150+ models on vLLM. GPU pooling is the real utilisation lever.
- AgentMinder and the problem your IAM system was not built for - agent identity, and a gateway that checks intent before every invocation.
- Governed data for agents - Tanzu data products, and why data product design is a cost lever as well as a governance one. GA is Fall 2026.
- Only 26% of AI-generated patches worked - TrueSource, and the statistic that should give anyone pause before automating remediation.
Security and skills - two posts
- Assess, Architect, Implement, Upskill - the Frontier AI Security Readiness Program, read as a design method. The five-pillar scoring model is worth running against your own estate whether or not you engage with the programme.
- The ARIE track - a security certification that names the technologies. Forty hours of Zero Trust labs at the VCDX end, and four stated outcomes that work as a capability checklist.
Hardware and networking - three posts
The most technically dense material of the week, and the least covered elsewhere.
- A real GPU reference architecture - VCF 9.1 on Supermicro HGX, down to the cable. Two B200 nodes running the same workload, one liquid-cooled and one air-cooled, on 3.2 Tb/s of RoCEv2 fabric per node.
- EVPN as the meeting point - VCF Networking and Cisco Nexus One. Standards-based interoperability rather than replacement, which means your existing fabric investment stops being an obstacle.
- The layer below the hypervisor - bare-metal lifecycle, and why DORA Articles 8 and 11 make automated firmware management a requirement rather than a maturity goal.
Released the same week - two posts
Not announcements, but they shipped during the same window and both matter more than their release notes suggest.
- VCF 9.1.1 is billed as a maintenance release - six capabilities were added to the Distributed VXLAN Connectivity Model, and there is a patch ordering constraint that will break your window if you miss it.
- Eleven management packs in one day - five of them databases, and a licensing line that decides whether you can use any of them.
The replays are live
If you missed it, or watched from the wrong timezone as I did, the plenary replay is already up in the Explore video library. Breakout session recordings appear 24 hours after each session ran, so by now the full catalogue should be there.
One suggestion on watching recordings, because the failure mode is predictable. They sit in a browser tab until they are stale. Pick three, put them in the calendar as real appointments, and book an hour afterwards with whoever else watched. One question on the agenda: what changes in our estate because of this? If the answer is nothing, that is a legitimate outcome, but say it out loud. "Nothing changes" is different from "we never got around to deciding."

And Las Vegas moves to spring
Explore 2027 shifts to 3 to 6 May 2027 and moves venue to Resorts World Las Vegas. Las Vegas averages around 31C in early May against 40C in late August, which anyone who walked between session halls this year will take without much thought.
Pre-registration closes 30 September 2026 and saves $100, stacking with early bird for $300 off the full pass. Registration opens properly on 12 January 2027.
One note for anyone reading this from Australia. The "protect your summer" argument in the announcement is northern hemisphere framing, since for us late August was already winter. What does matter locally is that early May falls about eight weeks before 30 June, so it is worth working out now whether that helps you spend remaining FY budget or lands after it is gone.
What I would take from the week
Two things, if you read nothing else.
The strategic direction is unambiguous. VCF as one control plane for VMs, containers, GPUs, models, data and agents. The announcements from 27 August, the topology-aware scheduler and confidential computing on both AMD and Intel and the NVIDIA certification, were the groundwork. Day one was what they were building toward.
And the most useful technical material of the week was not in any keynote. It was in the reference architectures and release notes published alongside it. That is normally true, and it is worth remembering when the next event calendar fills up.
