My Son’s E-Bike Failed, Got Denied Three Times, and Taught Me Everything About Buying Direct

A five-month journey through a warranty dispute the failure, the denials, the turning point, and what every parent of an e-bike rider should know

There’s a particular kind of dread that arrives when your kid’s expensive thing breaks, you’re pretty sure it shouldn’t have, and you can already feel the warranty argument coming. If you’ve been there, you know it. If you own or are thinking of buying a fat-tyre e-bike for your teenager, this is the article I wish someone had handed me before any of it started.

I’m not an influencer. I’m an engineer, a father, and someone who spent the better part of five months turning a denied warranty claim into a resolution I’m genuinely happy with. What follows is the whole story, end to end, including the parts where I got things wrong because the lessons cost me real time and stress, and they might save you some.

Let me give you the ending first, because this isn’t a hit piece and I don’t want you reading it that way: my son’s bike is back, restored to factory specification, under warranty, and he’s riding again. After everything, I’d buy the product again. The thing that turned it around was a single decision going directly to the manufacturer instead of through the reseller. Hold that thought; it’s the spine of the whole story.


The bike, and the boy who rides it hard

My son rides a Fatboy Scrambler V2 a fat-tyre electric bike, the kind that’s become enormously popular with teenagers. It cost around $3,700. It’s the sort of machine that gets kids off the couch, away from screens, and outside with their mates, which is something I value enormously and will come back to at the end.

He rides it the way teenagers ride things: enthusiastically, daily, and with the occasional knock. Over the months it picked up a few cosmetic battle scars the normal life of a bike owned by a fifteen-year-old. I’ll be honest about every one of those later, because they ended up mattering more than I expected.

The bike was bought through a reseller, not directly from Fatboy. At the time that seemed like a non-decision you buy where it’s convenient. By the end of this story, it was the most consequential choice we’d made.


The failure

On the 9th of April, my son was riding on a normal, sealed residential road. Not a trail. Not a jump. Not doing anything the bike isn’t built for. He went over a bump, felt the front suspension rebound much further than it should and behave unevenly, and sensibly stopped to check. When he lifted the handlebars, the fork stanchion slid clean out of the fork body. He rode home carefully credit to him for keeping his head and parked it.

When I examined the fork, the failure was unmistakably internal. With the bike standing upright and no rider on it, a huge length of bare stanchion was exposed. Lift the front wheel off the ground and the fork lowers slid freely down with no resistance at all they’d have separated completely if the brake hose hadn’t been holding them together like a tether. There was oil released from the damper, which had contaminated the front brake. And this is the key part there was no external impact damage to the fork whatsoever. No bent stanchions, no cracked lowers, no marks. Nothing that says “this hit something.”

As an engineer, the picture was clear to me: this was an internal structural failure of the fork, during ordinary use, on a bike that was under twelve months old with around 2,360 km on it. A front suspension fork simply shouldn’t do that in normal riding. This is exactly the territory consumer guarantees exist to cover.

I felt reasonably confident. I should not have been.


The complication I’d underestimated: modifications

Here’s where I have to be honest, because it’s the single most practical lesson in this whole account.

Like a lot of teenagers, my son had modified his bike. Specifically:

  • He’d fitted an aftermarket throttle, wired into the bike’s electrical system. The original was long gone.
  • He’d put on an aftermarket headlight, which involved cutting into the headlight wiring.
  • He’d disconnected the brake cut-off sensor the little switch that cuts motor power the instant you pull the brake.

Every one of these had an innocent, mundane explanation. None was a front-end riding crash. And crucially none of them had any mechanical path to a fork damper failing internally two months later.

But I was about to learn how all of this gets bundled together when a warranty claim lands on someone’s desk.


Denial number one, two, and three

The claim went in. It came back denied.

Then it came back denied again, on different grounds. Then a third time, on different grounds still.

While the matter was being handled through the reseller, the explanation kept shifting. At one point the failure was attributed to “stunt riding.” At another, to “lack of maintenance.” Later still and this is the one that genuinely bothered me as an engineer the fork failure was attributed to the electrical modifications.

Let me be plain about why that last one is nonsense, because it matters. A throttle and a headlight are electrical components. The fork is a mechanical, oil-and-spring suspension component. There is no causal pathway by which wiring in an aftermarket throttle makes an internal fork damper let go. They are unrelated systems. Attributing a mechanical fork failure to an electrical modification is like blaming a flat tyre on the radio.

The denials had a pattern I want to name, because if you’re ever in this situation you’ll recognise it: every time I addressed one reason, a new one appeared. A shifting justification is itself a signal. It tells you the conclusion came first and the reasons were assembled afterwards.

A short, unglamorous lesson on how you communicate

The initial quote, the line-item breakdown, my written queries about the fork and the warranty those went back and forth by email, and I have a clean record of them. When I asked specific questions in writing (what’s wrong with the fork, why is warranty marked “no,” is the front brake contamination consequential damage), I got written answers I could hold onto. This is the part that worked, and it worked because it was in writing.

Then the important moments drifted into short, informal messages. As the dispute wore on, more of it happened in quick SMS-style exchanges the chatty, friendly, one-or-two-sentence messages that feel efficient in the moment. And this is where it came apart. The actual warranty denial, the part that mattered most, arrived as a brief message rather than a formal written decision. When I asked to see the manufacturer’s written denial in their own words, I never received it the reply stayed at the level of “the supplier typically doesn’t approve claims like this.” When I asked a precise, multi-part question was the fork assessed on its own merits, or denied by default; was the benefit-of-the-doubt clause applied; where do I stand for future claims the answer that came back was a sentence that addressed none of it, and at one point referred to “electrical components” when the fault was a mechanical fork failure.

That’s the trap with the informal channel: short messages invite short answers, and a short answer is how the substance of your question quietly disappears. A multi-part written question is hard to dodge in a formal email. In a quick text, it’s easy three specific questions become one vague sentence, and the thread moves on as if they’d been answered.

With the manufacturer, I made a deliberate decision: everything in structured email, no exceptions. My very first contact with Fatboy was a single, complete email the bike’s serial number, the failure set out as four numbered observations, the consumer-law framing, photos and a video attached. Every exchange after that stayed in the same format. The difference was night and day. A proper email forces a proper answer; it’s much harder to wave away four numbered points than a one-line text. It creates a clean, timestamped record. And it signals, without your having to say so, that you’re treating the matter seriously and expect the same in return.

So here’s the practical rule I’d give anyone heading into something like this:

Insist on email from the start, and don’t let the important parts slide into text or phone. A line as simple as “I’d prefer to keep everything to email so we both have a clear record” is enough to set the expectation. And the crucial habit: if anything important is said by phone or SMS, immediately follow it up with an email “Confirming our conversation just now: you advised that…” and restate it. That one move converts a vanishing verbal exchange into a documented fact. A warranty denial in particular should always be obtained in writing, in the decision-maker’s own words; “they usually say no” is not a denial you can do anything with.

Why it matters, concretely:

  • A record protects you when the story shifts and in my case it shifted three times. Email means you have the original grounds in black and white when a new one appears.
  • Email forces completeness. Specific written questions are far harder to leave unanswered than they are in a quick message.
  • It sets the tone. Calm, structured, written correspondence signals you’re a serious party, and tends to be met in kind.
  • It travels. When I escalated to the manufacturer, I could forward a clean, coherent thread rather than trying to reconstruct what had been said in passing.

None of this requires being combative or stiff. It’s just discipline: keep it in writing, keep it complete, keep the record.If I were doing it again, the moment the reseller’s answers started arriving as quick texts that didn’t quite address my questions, I’d have written back politely “Can we keep this to email, and can you put the denial and its reasons in writing?” It’s the single cheapest thing you can do to protect yourself, and it costs nothing but the habit of opening an email instead of firing back a text.


The turning point: going direct to the manufacturer

I escalated directly to Fatboy the manufacturer rather than continuing through the reseller. And the experience changed so completely that it reframed everything I thought about how to buy these products.

The first difference was consistency. My correspondence was handled by Chloe, who answered every email clearly and promptly, kept the process moving, and was straight with me about what was covered and what wasn’t.   • Front suspension (standard fork): covered by Fatboy as goodwill
  • Labour (full service): $400
  • Genuine throttle with isolator: $120
  • New headlight: $100 (the original wiring had been cut)
  • Genuine crank: $70 (replacing the one bent in the February tip-over)
  • Brake pads, display buttons, electrical terminals: no charge
  • Battery terminal repair (burn damage): no charge
  • Front suspension fitting, brake bleed and test: no charge

Total: $690.

And the part that mattered most for the long term: the balance of the original two-year warranty was reinstated from the original purchase date, once the bike was back to factory spec.

For a bike that had been written off three separate times in warranty terms, with a reseller repair quote that had been heading toward $1,700, this was a genuinely good outcome.

If your child’s e-bike has a brake cut-off sensor, it must stay connected. Many kids disconnect them. If yours has, get it reconnected. You are protecting a very expensive motor and controller, and given the battery is involved a meaningful safety margin too.


Modifications and warranty: the honest, reasonable reality

Once it was explained properly, Fatboy’s position on modifications was entirely fair, and worth understanding before your child starts customising:

Anything wired into the electrical system aftermarket throttle, aftermarket headlight, disconnected brake sensor voids warranty cover for related electrical failures. Not the whole bike. Just electrical failures connected to those modifications. The logic is sound: they haven’t tested third-party controllers and components, and they can’t predict how an unknown part will fail or what it’ll take down with it. The analogy Josh used has stuck with me it’s like buying a new car and fitting a bigger turbo and a tune. You’ve voided the warranty, even if it’s barely been driven.

Cosmetic and mechanical changes, by contrast, are fine. Grips, seat covers, race plates no issue at all, as long as you don’t over-tension or kink the control cables when you do it. Tyres can be swapped for the same spec (20 x 4) without voiding anything, though low-profile “supermoto” style tyres with shorter sidewalls raise the risk of rim damage from potholes and that’s your liability, not theirs. Replacing wear items like brake pads yourself is perfectly acceptable.

None of this was unreasonable. My problem was that I learned the rules after the modifications, not before. You don’t have to make the same mistake.


Servicing: less rigid than I feared

I’d been genuinely worried that I was locked into a strict servicing schedule and that missing it would void everything. The manufacturer put that to rest:

They recommend a service every 1,000 km, or every 6 to 12 months depending on use. They only become concerned about serious neglect think years without a service. Disc brake pads last roughly 800 to 1,000 km (less if only the rear brake is worked hard as little as 400 to 500 km), so check them visually and replace before they go metal-on-metal, or you’ll be buying discs too.

A strong recommendation, not a rigid enforce-or-deny clause. That distinction matters, and it was a relief to have it clarified.


What I’d tell another parent the whole list

Here’s everything distilled, the things I wish I’d known on day one:

1. Buy direct from the manufacturer if you possibly can. This is the headline. My experience dealing with Fatboy directly was incomparably better than going through a reseller. The manufacturer engineered the product, stands behind it, and engaged seriously with the actual problem. A middleman’s incentive can simply be to make the sale and move the issue along.

2. Learn the modification rules before your kid touches anything electrical. A disconnected brake sensor or a wired-in aftermarket throttle can void electrical warranty cover and the brake sensor in particular protects an expensive motor and a lithium battery.

3. Keep every original part. When my son swapped the throttle, headlight and other components, the originals vanished. Restoring the bike to factory spec meant buying replacements. Put every original part in a box and label it.

4. Document everything, with dates. Every knock, every incident, every conversation. When a claim is assessed, being able to account for all the damage and clearly separate unrelated cosmetic knocks from the actual failure is what protects you.

5. Keep it in writing insist on email. This one is easy to overlook and genuinely powerful. Short, informal messages let important questions go unanswered; structured email forces a complete reply and leaves a clean, timestamped record. Say plainly that you’d prefer to keep everything to email, and if anything important is said by phone or text, follow it up with a “confirming our conversation…” email. A shifting story is far easier to challenge when you have the original in writing.

6. Don’t accept a shifting story. If a denial keeps changing its grounds, that’s a tell. Stay calm, stay factual, and address each point on its merits without getting drawn into the emotion of it.

7. Escalate respectfully to the manufacturer. If the reseller isn’t engaging properly, go to the source. In my case, it completely changed the outcome.

8. A failure isn’t the end of the relationship. Things break. What defines a company is how they put it right. After all of this, my view of Fatboy is genuinely positive.


The part I won’t gloss over

I want to be fair and balanced, because an account that’s all praise isn’t honest.

The three months my son spent without his bike was hard. Hard on him, and disruptive to our household. For a teenager, three months is a long time, and “the warranty process is ongoing” is cold comfort when your bike’s in pieces and your mates are all out riding. That was a real cost, and I won’t pretend it wasn’t.

But once I was dealing with Fatboy directly, the team Chloe, Richard, Josh, and the others on-site were excellent. They explained the engineering honestly, didn’t hide behind the reseller’s mis-diagnosis, covered the expensive parts as a goodwill gesture, reinstated the warranty, and even replaced some small missing hardware on the spot without being asked. A serious failure, three denials, and five months of back-and-forth turned into a good resolution the moment I went direct to the manufacturer. If you take one thing from this entire account, make it that: buy direct, learn the modification rules, keep your originals, document everything, and don’t give up on a claim that’s been unfairly denied.
